Native British Fern plant 1ltr (Dryopteris affinis)
Create and instant woodland with large overhanging fronds.
Dryopteris affinis is a magnificent garden fern, bearing a shuttlecock of long, upright, pale green fronds with contrasting Gold, scaley stems in spring. In mild winters it will stay green, but in cold, exposed positions it’s more likely to be deciduous.
Poised, damp-loving, hardy. It’s leaves are light yellow-green initially, with hard fronds, becoming darker later in the year, 60–160cm long. It prefers woodland, shady hedges, stream banks and mountain ledges but tolerates full sun, dry soil and even exposed, windy positions. It also grows in heathland, moorland, in the open on hillsides and mountains and especially among rocks.
Despite needing shade to thrive, Dryopteris affinis happily tolerates several hours of sun each day, and is more wind-resistant than most ferns. It’s a great choice for damp, shady parts of the garden, where it has terrific presence, contrasting well with low groundcover plants. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
